What are the basic steps to perform to get a DR up and running ASAP? |
|
Installing configuring DR as follows;
- Â
Install MAX + fR on all slaves.
- Â
Ensure that the fr_stage1.ini file on all slaves is correct - this is the file DR uses NOT plugin.ini
-
Run fRServer on all the slaves - should show as an icon in the system tray, double click to get the window.
- Â On Master workstation enter host names or IP addresses into the DR rollout.
- Â Click start slaves and wait for them to start
- Â Render
To resolve errors with slaves try the following;
- Â Start MAX normally on the slave, resolve any plugin errors.
- Â Start the slave manually from the fRServer window - note and resolve any errors.
- Â Try a Backburner render on the slaves - several users have reported that DR will work correctly once BB has been used once.

I just did a DR render. Some of my slave buckets won't finish, and I have to force-quit max. |
|
Edit the bucket timeouts so that they are long enough to allow a bucket to complete on your slowest machine.

I've put my computer name into the DR rollout, but they're not starting. How do I get them to render? |
|
Sometimes the network name won't take. Open a command prompt, and ping
your other machine. Enter its IP (e.g. 192.168.1.122), and it will work
more consistently.

How can I use more than 10 cpus for DR?

When using DR - One computer can access my computer to render as a slave, but mine won't connet to his computer. Why would that be, and how can I fix that? |
|
Distributed rendering needs a working nEtwork environment with proper setup and stable connections. Loose contacts or bad cabling is a big problem for DR rendering even when windows seems to work.
If one PC can DR render and the other one can't several reasons may be possible:
- Make sure the fR-Server application is running on the slave
- Make sure that the frserver.ini file is properly configured
- Make sure that the start.max file is present and the path in the frserver.ini is correct
- Also check out the IP adress/name of the slave PC try either option
- Backburner must be run at least one time on all machines involved in a DR rendering.
- try to run the 3ds max DR sessio nlocally first (from within the fR-Server application) If this works fiine it is a TCP/IP access problem.
- Make sure the used Port number is free and not blcoked bei either PC

Is it possible to start a distributed rendering and exclude the pc I'am working at (same like in 3D Max/Backburner)? |
|
No, finalRender Stage-1 SP2d does not support that kind of distributed rendering. There is no such thing as a DR-Render Manager right now. One suggested method would be to force a single processor thread for the 3ds max session controlling the DR rendering. This ensures a low CPU load on a dual system and will allow you to open a second 3ds max session to work with while in the background a DR rendering takes place.
